Thor’s Well, Oregon, USA It appears as if the Pacific Ocean is being drained away down a giant bottomless hole on the Oregon coast. The hole - big enough to swallow a large boat – looks like a feature on an alien planet. However, the seawater levels in the Pacific Ocean are actually perfectly safe, because the hole – called Thor’s Well, and sometimes the ‘gate to hell’ – is actually around 20 feet deep. It is a remarkable sight, though – and it attracts hundreds of tourists every year who are keen to see the incredible phenomenon in action. At high tide water bursts upwards out of the well in spectacular fashion, an event that never fails to delight onlookers. It makes for dramatic photographs. Madidi National Park, Bolivia At first sight, this place looks very picturesque, but it’s actually very dangerous. Why? Because it’s home to the most poisonous and aggressive fauna in the world: contact with any of the plants growing in this park can cause severe itching, rash and dizziness. Any cut, or even a small wound, can become infected with tropical parasites. More than 20,000 species are found in Madidi. Madidi is a national park in the upper Amazon river basin in Bolivia. Established in 1995, it has an area of 18,958 square kilometres, and, along with the nearby protected (though not necessarily contiguous) areas Manuripi-Heath, Apolobamba, and (across the border in Peru) the Manu Biosphere Reserve, Madidi is part of one of the largest protected areas in the world. Strokkur geyser, Iceland Strokkur (Icelandic for "churn") is one of the most famous hot springs in Iceland and belongs to the famous Golden Circle. Strokkur is a fountain geyser in the Geysir geothermal area in the southwest part of the country, east of Reykjavik. Strokkur is a powerful hot spring and an impressive sight. It erupts about every 4–8 minutes and spouts water to a height of 15 – 20 m, sometimes up to 40 m. Strokkur was first mentioned in 1789, after an earthquake helped to unblock the conduit of the geyser. Its activity fluctuated throughout the 19th century; in 1815 its height was estimated to have been as much as 60 metres. It continued to erupt until the turn of the 20th century, until another earthquake blocked the conduit again. In 1963, upon the advice of the Geysir Committee, locals cleaned out the blocked conduit through the bottom of the basin, and the geyser has been regularly erupting ever since. ...
